Hippocratic Oxymel – Ancient Greece

Context & Origin:
Hippocrates, the father of medicine (460–370 BC), prescribed oxymel, a vinegar and honey-based tonic, for inflammation, respiratory health, and digestion. Vinegar helps alkalize the body, while honey provides soothing and antimicrobial properties.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup of raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger (grated)
  • ½ teaspoon of turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon of black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Mix all ingredients in a jar.
  2. Shake well and let it infuse for 24 hours.
  3. Take 1 tablespoon daily, diluted in water if needed.
